While there wasn’t so much as a second thought as to what our main character’s name was, the same did not apply to the other characters. Deedee the Bee, Grady Bear’s loyal sidekick, didn’t start out as Deedee the Bee. In fact, she wasn’t even female to begin with.
Her original name was… Ben the Bee.
As a read-aloud drama book, our writer concluded after much deliberation, that there wasn’t a lot of rhythm in “Ben the Bee”, and decided to change it to “Dee the Bee”, in part after the pet name of her sister, and hence changing the bee’s gender to female. (What better way to show our affection for those we love!) But “Dee the Bee” didn’t quite cut it for the writer too, who spent a number more days mulling over how to create rhythmic sentences with Dee the Bee. After all, if it was to be read out, a little more punch into the Bee’s name for the readers couldn’t be all that bad. It took her weeks, but one fateful day, while in a hairdressing shop, the name, Deedee the Bee, popped up.
And it remained since.
